Rhinoplasty main types:

1.Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty:

This non-invasive procedure uses injectable fillers like collagen or hyaluronic acid to adjust the shape of the nose. Results are temporary, typically lasting about a year.

Open Rhinoplasty:

This method offers maximum accuracy for reshaping and reconstructing the nose, ensuring both aesthetic and functional improvements. While there may be a small scar, it fades with time.

Closed Rhinoplasty:

Also known as “scarless rhinoplasty,” this method involves incisions hidden inside the nose. While the procedure is more complex, it allows for a quicker recovery.

The main goal of rhinoplasty is to change the external appearance of the nose by altering the nasal bone (upper third), nasal cartilage (lower two-thirds), and skin.

Rhinoplasty can be performed to:

1. Straighten a crooked nose
2. Reduce the size of the nose
3. Narrow the nasal bridge
4. Improve nasal symmetry
5. Refine the size or shape of the nose tip
6. Correct a hump or depression on the bridge

A personalized treatment plan is designed based on the patient’s concerns and goals. Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty are healthy individuals with realistic expectations regarding their post-surgery appearance and breathing. During the consultation, the surgeon will discuss what the patient hopes to achieve, review their medical history, and examine the nose.

Rhinoplasty Procedure:

Rhinoplasty can be done in a hospital or outpatient facility, typically under local anaesthesia to numb the nose and surrounding areas. The patient may also be given sedatives through an IV to help them relax. Once sedated, the surgeon will make incisions inside or between the nostrils, allowing them to reshape the cartilage and bone. If additional cartilage is required, it may be taken from the ear or inside the nose, or a bone graft may be used. The surgery generally takes about three to four hours, though more complex cases may take longer.

Post-Surgery Recovery:

After surgery, patients typically wear a nasal splint for the first week. Swelling and bruising around the eyes are common but usually begin to subside after three days. Swelling may persist for up to two weeks, and minor swelling can remain for up to six months. The final appearance of the nose will be clear once the healing process is complete. It’s essential to avoid strenuous activities for about six weeks after surgery. However, most patients can resume their social activities within two to three weeks, with no visible signs of surgery.

Risks of Rhinoplasty:

As with any surgery, rhinoplasty carries some risks, such as bleeding, anaesthesia reactions, or infection. Specific risks include:

1. Breathing difficulties
2. Numbness in the nose
3. Nosebleeds
4. Scarring
5. Asymmetry

Tip Rotation and Reduction:

Alarplasty or Nasal Width Reduction:

For patients who feel their nose is too wide at the base, alarplasty can reduce the width of the nasal base, creating a more balanced appearance. This procedure adjusts the pyriform aperture, narrowing the nostrils and making the angles at the base steeper.

Deciding on Rhinoplasty:

If you’re considering rhinoplasty, Dr. Stevenson is a highly regarded Maxillofacial Surgeon with a proven track record of successful surgeries. Schedule a consultation to discuss your goals and concerns. Dr. Stevenson will assess your facial features, including the structure of your nose, and advise you on the best course of action to achieve your desired results. He will also discuss your health, the costs involved, recovery times, and any potential risks.

In some cases, patients may not be fully satisfied with the results, and revision surgery may be necessary. If you’re considering a second surgery, you must wait until your nose has fully healed, which can take up to a year.
